How the matcher works
Breed facts
Weights, heights, growth, lifespans and health come from published sources: breed standards, kennel clubs and veterinary studies.
Trait ratings
Trait ratings, classes and rare picks are Kintail's estimates of a breed's typical dog, made with the help of AI and reviewed by Kintail. They are not measurements.
Breed faces
The breed faces are illustrations drawn with the help of AI, converted to line art and reviewed by Kintail.
The breed matcher
The breed matcher pairs your answers with those breed traits. Kintail+ members can also ask an AI model directly; what it writes from your answers is not reviewed.
Meet the dog
Breed explains only about 9% of how individual dogs differ in behaviour (Morrill et al. 2022, Science). Size and coat follow breed closely; temperament mostly does not. Meet the dog before you decide. A good breeder breeds for temperament as well as health, and matches each puppy's personality to the right home (Dogs Trust; American Kennel Club).
Frequently asked questions
How does the matcher choose?
Your answers about yourself pick "You're most like". What you want in a dog, the looks you like and your home pick "Suits you best". The matching happens on your device.
What does Kintail keep?
Kintail counts each quiz run against a random id, and your account, if you're signed in. A "Good match?" vote sends your quiz answers with it. A list you save is kept in your account.
Does it take children into account?
Yes. With children under six at home, breeds best kept with adults or older children are left out, and each result says what is known about that breed with children. Supervise any dog with young children.
